Preparations for the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking have entered the final stages, with the adoption on 19 November of a regulation by the European Commission for the establishment of 10 European Partnerships between the European Union, Member States and/or the industry. The SESAR 3 JU and the nine other partnerships are seen as catalysts for speeding up the transition towards a green, climate neutral and digital Europe, and to make European industry more resilient and competitive. The finishing steps will now be taken for setting up the governance structure of the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking, allowing for a formal kick-off to take place in December.

The SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking builds on the success and the momentum generated by the SESAR Joint Undertaking to deliver the Digital European Sky, making air transport smarter, more sustainable, connected and accessible to all airspace users, including new entrants. Once operational, the partnership will implement research and innovation roadmaps to achieve the Digital European Sky, matching the ambitions of the ‘European Green Deal' and the ‘Europe fit for the digital age’ initiative. These priorities outlined in the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) to build a digitalised infrastructure will also be critical for a post-COVID recovery, enabling aviation to become more scalable, economically sustainable, environmentally efficient and predictable.

Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said:

"These Partnerships are all about pooling research and innovation resources and ensuring that research results are turned into useful innovations for the citizens. With Horizon Europe we are committed to emerge from the climate crisis, provide sustainable solutions to major environmental challenges, improve citizens’ health and accelerate a sustainable recovery. This will benefit all Europeans."
