U-space initial services - USIS

Drone services are about to transform our lives in so many ways. As part of SESAR’s U-space roll-out plan, U-Space Initial Services (USIS) will support the management of drone operations with a set of different core services such as e-Identification, e-Registration, Surveillance, Tracking (including Situation monitoring), Scheduling (Flight permissions, FPL validation, flight notifications) and Dynamic Airspace Management (no-drone zone management).
The progressive spread of drones and related services requires the continuous development, validation and implementation of U-Space services to provide safe, equal and efficient access to airspaces all across Europe.
In this frame, USIS aims at validating the initial core services that will be provided by the UAV Traffic Management (“UTM”) to UAVs, UAV operators/pilots, authorities in charge of the airspace. The objective was to demonstrate how users can access the airspace more easily and conduct their operations efficiently in a safe and secured airspace, thus conciliating the concerns of the authorities with the push of the market to conduct more and more UAV operations.
The open day will include presentations, plenary session and a live demonstration, followed by a panel discussion with project participants where you will have a chance to ask questions about the validation.

Demonstrations will cover a wide range of operations: parcel delivery; road traffic patrol; professional photography; railway and power lines surveillance; search and rescue, airport operations; interaction with general aviation; and firefighting

Demonstration of multiple U-space suppliers - DOMUS
The demonstration will involve three U‐space service providers interacting with an ecosystem manager and several drone operators that will fly drones from different manufacturers.

A European UTM testbed for U-space - EuroDRONE
The demonstration will test U-space functionalities up to U3, connecting various stakeholders (operators, regulators, law enforcement agencies, product developers) and different systems in a unified environment.

Finnish-Estonian "Gulf of Finland" very large U-space demonstration - GOF U-space
The demonstration aims to establish a pre-operational flight information management system (FIMS) with an architecture capable of integrating existing commercial-off-the-shelf UTM components. The capabilities of the FIMS will be demonstrated in different live cases representing the most typical visual line of sight (VLOS) and beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) missions

Validation of U-space by tests in urban and rural areas - VUTURA
VUTURA aims to show how a common U-space framework (based on system-wide information management) with U1 and U2 services can enable multiple U-space service providers and multiple operators to execute commercially feasible B-VLOS operations. The demonstration will showcase these operations in a rural, urban and smart city environment.

GEOfencing for Safe and Autonomous Flight in Europe - GeoSAFE
The demonstration will show several drones from different types flying near restricted area in a U-space context.
Scenario will be a search and rescue with the participation of firefighters. This final demonstration will have several purposes:
- Highlight the results obtained during the test period
- Show the technology readiness level of existing geofencing solution
- Show the link between active geofencing services and UTM services

Proving Operations of Drones with Initial UTM - PODIUM

Before publishing its final report, the PODIUM consortium seeks to share its insights and get feedback on its main conclusions and recommendations from a wider set of engaged stakeholders. This is the aim of the PODIUM dissemination event that will take place at EUROCONTROL Headquarters, Brussels, on the 17th of October 2019. Demonstration of an “unexpected”scenario with an AED delivery priority flight with multiple drone flights in the vicinity. Registration, flight planning, flight authorisation and situational awareness (ADS-B 1090 MHz transponder) for the operator and supervisor roles. Presentation of initial validation results and debriefing with all attendees.
4 June 2019, Groningen Airport Eelde, The Netherlands
Demonstration of “unexpected” scenarios for BVLOS flights from a controlled airport in a Class C CTR. First BVLOS flight in the Netherlands in this environment. Registration, flight planning, flight authorisation and situational awareness (ADS-B 1090 MHz transponder) for the operator and supervisor (ATCO in the tower) roles. Presentation of initial validation results and debriefing with all attendees.

Demonstration of automated airfield fence inspection flight with multiple drone flights in the vicinity. 13 June 2019, Eurocontrol, Brétigny-sur-Orge, France
Demonstration of BVLOS flight performed at the Drones Paris Region cluster (reserved drone zone of 300 hectares with a 150 metre ceiling). Registration, flight planning, flight authorisation and situational awareness (GSM based tracker) for the operator and supervisor (Cluster supervisor) roles. Presentation of initial validation results and debriefing with all attendees. first speaker panel on the professional drone operator and ATC perspectives with AEROMAPPER, Dronétix Technologie and DSNA Services; second speaker panel on the U-space CORUSconcept, UTM supplier perspective and the new EU regulation on drone operations with EUROCONTROL, Unifly nv and the French Direction Generale de l'Aviation Civile.

Demonstration of BVLOS flights for different scenarios (e.g. C2 link loss) in the vicinity of the airport in a Class D CTR. Strong emphasis on the Airbus integrated controller working position and the ATC collaborative interface with drone operations. Situational awareness with GSM-based and UNB L-band trackers.
Activities on drone integration and demonstration in VLL operations - SAFEDRONE
The Safedrone project aims to define and detail pre-flight services (electronic registration, electronic identification, planning and flight approval) as well as in-flight services (geolimitation or geofencing, flight tracking, dynamic airspace information and automatic technologies to detect and avoid obstacles).
Safedrone aims to demonstrate how to integrate general aviation, state aviation, optionally piloted aircraft and drones into non-segregated airspace in a multi-aircraft and manned flight environment. The project will perform a large number of demonstrations in at Spain the ATLAS test flight centre located in Villacarrillo (Jaén, Spain) in order to accumulate evidence and experience about the required services and procedures necessary to operate drones in a safe, efficient and secure way within U-space.
The demonstration is about U1 and U2 services, and a limited version of U3 advanced services including automated detect & avoid technologies.
Project participants are: CRIDA,Enaire,IAI,Indra,Unifly and the University of Seville.

Information Management Portal to Enable the inTegration of Unmanned Systems - IMPETUS
The project analyses the information management needs of drone operations in very low-level (VLL) airspace. The project also proposes technologically and commercially feasible solutions to address those needs.
