UAS – A booster for synergies between civil, defence and space Industries
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have been actively used in the defence sector over the last 30 years mainly using US and Israeli platforms. The emergence of new types of platforms, from micro UAS to High Altitude Pseudo Satellites (HAPS), as well as the current development of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) by four European nations, offer an opportunity to foster sustainable and smart mobility, improve the competitiveness of European industry and strengthen Europe's strategic autonomy in this key technical domain. This also represents an excellent opportunity for civil-military cooperation since many of the technological building blocks building up these systems, such as Detect and Avoid, autonomy, datalinks, electrooptical sensors and other payloads are paradigmatic cases of dual-use enabling technologies, which ideally should also have European origin.
This panel will gather key actors from industry and European organisations to discuss the role of military UAS as a trigger for the development, standardisation and regulation of key dual-use enabling technologies in Europe.

ALBATROSS: Optimised operations for greener aviation Launched in February 2021, the SESAR 3 JU very-large scale project, ALBATROSS, is conducting a series of gate-to-gate live flight trials across Europe with a view to demonstrating the feasibility of implementing more energy-efficient flights by combining several technical and operational innovations. ALBATROSS follows a holistic approach by covering all flight phases, directly involving all relevant stakeholder groups (such as airlines, ANSPs, network managers, airports and industry). Many SESAR solutions will be put into practice during the flight demonstrations, from new PBN approach transitions to optimised climb and descent, a more collaborative and dynamic management of necessary airspace constraints, sustainable taxiing and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) usage. Initial 4D mission trajectory with integrated dynamic mobile areas (DMA) types 1 and 2 supported by automation and dynamic civil-military collaborative decision making (CDM)
Europe's armed forces operate more than 150,000 flights per year. To accommodate these flights, the airspace is often closed, sometimes at short notice, to civil traffic. Given the growth of air traffic demand and complexity, the Optimised Airspace Users Operationsproject (PJ.07/OAUO) is developing dynamic solutions that allow more flexible civil-military cooperation to maximise the use of airspace. These include the design of airspace reservation (DMA type 1 & 2), in addition to advanced airspace management and the dynamic exchange of ATM-related data between relevant ATM actors. Civil and military operational stakeholders benefit equally from the flexibility of mission trajectory ATM-related data and their use in a dynamic CDM process supported by automated tool algorithms for impact assessments.
The anticipated ATM performance expectations are met by maximising the use of airspace capacity and optimising flight trajectories, resulting in improved aviation sustainability, while safeguarding the effectiveness of military training missions.
A demonstration of the solution will take place on 21 June from 13:15 – 14:15

SESAR U-space research: demonstrating UAM
As the drone service market continues to grow and take shape in Europe, the pressure is on to make sure that these air vehicles are integrated safely and securely into our already busy airspace. Transforming infrastructure to support such operations is critical to harnessing the potential of the sector, unlocking market growth, jobs and services to EU citizens. But a simple adaptation of our current ATM system is not enough; integrating these air vehicles in the numbers forecasted requires a new approach. This is where the European Commission’s U-space initiative comes in and the SESAR 3 JU’s innovation portfolio of research and demonstration projects that underpins it.
