Sintef
SINTEF is one of the largest research institutions in Europe. With the vision "Technology for a better society" SINTEF has been contributing to SESAR for more than a decade.

What is the added value of being a member of the SESAR 3 JU?
As one of Scandinavia's largest research and technology organisations, we are committed to actively participating in shaping the future working agenda of European aviation. Only as a SESAR member do we get the possibility to participate in creating the future working programme together with the whole value chain. Moreover, SESAR provides the right fora to have all important stakeholders at the table to achieve our mission.
Why is air traffic management and its digital transformation important to Sintef?
Air traffic management is important to SINTEF as it is a prerequisite for an efficient aviation system. Aviation is a key mode of transport in Norway, with an extensive network of regional airports being the backbone of settlement and value creation throughout the whole country.
As an organisation that links research and industry, it is natural to be at the forefront of digital transformation by facilitating the pathway from cutting edge research to innovative applications. Moreover, SINTEF has committed to making aviation sustainable and is working in the spirit of the green and digital twin transition to achieve this goal.
As a member of SESAR since its beginnings, we have seen that the digitalisation of the European sky has already brought big improvements. However, there is a great demand in Norway for pushing the green and digital transition further in aviation. SINTEF has the expertise and is committed to working to meet these demands together with strategic partners such as Avinor.
What are Sintef’s top three innovation priorities?
In SESAR, SINTEF's top innovative priorities are:
- Improved traffic sequencing with optimal integration of arriving and departing traffic using AI.
- New dynamic airspace configuration concepts take the workload of the controllers into consideration.
- Enhanced cyber security, and how it should be embedded in the aviation safety requirements.
In which flagships of the Digital European Sky programme is Sintef particularly interested in getting involved, and why?
For SINTEF the flagship areas of main interest are connected and automated air traffic management, demand capacity balancing and dynamic airspace configuration, U-space and urban air mobility. But since we are a research institute that has a broad interest in innovation, we see potential in all flagships.
