In April, the SESAR 3 JU AURA (ATM U-space Interface) industrial research project brought together stakeholders in Madrid to present two solutions delivered thanks to the work of the demonstration consortium. Coordinated by Indra, the AURA (PJ.34) project aims to integrate the management of the very low-level airspace (VLL) or U-space as it is also known, with traditional air traffic management systems. The goal is to enable seamless operations between U-space and ATM.
The first day of the event focused on the first solution delivered by the demonstration, a collaborative U-space ATM interface. The solution aims to enable the exchange of information between U-space web and ATM through harmonised SWIM (system-wide information management) for avoiding airspace fragmentation and allow the safe operation of drones into controlled and uncontrolled airspace. This solution, led by Indra, was introduced by Cengiz Ari, SESAR JU U-space Programme Manager offering an introduction on the U-space framework. Following on, Julián Alonso Alvarez, SESAR WP10 project manager introduced the project and presented the solution 1 objectives.
Afterwards, the results of each of the regional clusters below were reported by partners from Indra, AIRBUS, Frequentis, DSNA, Thales, Leonardo and ENAV.
AURA partners were then presented with the inputs given by CORUS ConOps derived from the work done through the concept and services validated. A very interesting panel discussion moderated by Marta García Gutiérrez, Indra took place between clusters’ leaders on the new services and future ATC involvement in the concept and collaborative ATM - U-space interface standardization.
On day two, a session moderated by Pablo Sanchez-Escalonilla, Solution Leader addressed the development of a highly-automated collaborative U-space - ATM environment. This solution focuses a medium-to-long-term concept for a collaborative ATM-U-space environment, which facilitates seamless operations of drones and manned aviation in controlled airspace. The results of each exercise were presented alongside contribution from Jacob Blamey, NATS on the explanation of the concept. Presentations were carried out by representatives from CRIDA A.I.E./ENAIRE, Airbus, Indra, NLR and SINTEF. Afterwards, an engaging debate took place focusing on the Dynamic Airspace Reconfiguration concept which was moderated again by Jacob Blamey, NATS and Lars Stridsman, LFV.
