A total of 51 delegates attended the 2nd SESAR MET Workshop at the UK Met Office in Exeter on 29-30 May 2013. The delegates represented work packages, Operational Focus Areas (OFAs) and Airspace Users, with some participants also from relevant areas outside of the SESAR programme of work. The workshop addressed some key MET concepts and explored how MET capability could help to achieve operational performance improvements and to focus on building validation opportunities for SESAR (MET) Solutions. The following key topics were addressed:

  1. MET requirements for SESAR;
  2. Utilising MET capability within SESAR;
  3. Managing uncertainty in MET;
  4. The 4DWxCube concept; and,
  5. Validation including MET.

A series of talks illustrated these topics, including a presentation about the approach to utilising MET in NextGen from a representative at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) in the U.S. In addition, delegates were shown around the supercomputer and forecasting facilities of the Met Office, demonstrating some of the capabilities of a modern MET Service.

For the next steps, It is intended to continue these areas of work through further coordination with OFAs, to ensure that MET capability is used to help achieve operational performance improvements.
