ENAV, the leader of SESAR WP3 “validation infrastructure adaptation & integration” has produced a video featuring the outcomes of their validation activities of TMA (Terminal Manoeuvring Area) and Airport concepts.
At the ROMA experimental center, the validation activities aimed to improve the efficiency of ATM in complex terminal areas. For all incoming flights, an Arrival Manager tool (AMAN) is used to assist controllers in correctly sequencing inbound traffic so as to feed the runway at an optimum rate. This validation exercise was able to extend the horizon of an AMAN tool by requesting aircrafts to absorb delays or gain time with minimum speed variations using Airborne spacing and RTA (Required Time of Arrival) techniques and procedures. This exercise allowed the ENAV controllers involved to build the arrival sequence of flights much earlier than is currently possible and thereby decrease the overall workload of both pilots and controllers .
At Milano Malpensa airport and Amsterdam NLR center, the exercises focused on the validation of SESAR airport concept, in particular through an increased use of Datalink and Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System. The outcome was a clear improvement of surface operation even in low visibility conditions, while keeping a high level of safety (runway incursion, aircraft separation).
