SESAR 3 JU and its U-space projects participated in the Amsterdam Drone Week from 21-23 March, showcasing the progress achieved on the safe and secure integration of drones.

U-space is a set of new services relying on a high level of digitalisation and automation of functions and specific procedures designed to support safe, efficient and secure access to airspace for large numbers of drones. The SESAR 3 JU has been progressively expanding its innovation portfolio on U-space with a view to reaching a sufficient level of technology, operational understanding and trust to support advanced drone operations and to ensure their safe integration with air traffic management (ATM) for traditional manned aviation.

The first set of U-space services is now ready for deployment under the regulatory framework of the new European U-space regulation, which came into force in January 2023.

During the event, participants had have a chance to speak to representatives from the SESAR 3 JU’s Digital Sky Demonstrators, BURDI, EALU-AER and U-ELCOME. Launched in November 2022, the demonstrators aim to support the full deployment of initial U-space services for drones at multiple sites across Europe; their first flights will take place in the summer of 2023. Also showcasing their results were SESAR 2020 projects SAFIR-MED, AURA and CORUS-XUAM, which have validated and demonstrated important processes between U-space and ATM.

During the week-long conference, the SESAR 3 JU organised a dedicated technical workshop with demonstrations/demonstrators moderated by SESAR 3 JU expert Robin Garrity, who also participated in a session of the European Network of U-space Stakeholders alongside partners European Commission, EUROCONTROL and EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Some of the key takeaways were:

  • Speed up implementation of ready-for-market services
  • Continue to innovate & deliver advanced tech & solutions
  • Maintain strong collaboration
