The ALIAS project conference “A SESAR Innovation Challenge: Responsibilities, Liabilities and Automation in Aviation” was the successful start of discussions on topics related to liability and automation in air traffic management. A particular focus of interest was the innovation challenge faced by the SESAR Joint Undertaking. The conference was hosted by the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence last month.

Experts from different disciplines such as the European Commission, EASA, ANSPs, manufacturers, universities and staff associations discussed the ways of dealing with the many changes in the allocation of liabilities from different perspective that result from the use of higher levels of automation in complex socio-technical system.

The conference officially launched the SESAR Legal Research Network, a community of experts and professionals sharing knowledge and experiences in the field, available at http://www.aliasnetwork.eu/. All the presentations from the conference are available through this network, to which participants from academia, research centres, industry/SMEs etc. are welcome to join.
