The SESAR 3 JU showcased its research and innovation on sustainable aviation at the International Paris Air Show at Le Bourget from 19-26 June. Over the course of the week, the JU welcomed a wide range of delegations, aviation professionals and members of the public, as well as organised a dedicated session on air traffic management’s contribution to meeting Europe’s net zero ambitions.

At the Paris Air Lab, an exhibition area dedicated to exhibiting solutions on decarbonisation, the SESAR 3 JU showcased a selection of solutions aimed at making Europe the most environmentally-friendly sky to fly in the world. Solutions that were showcased included greener taxiing, climate-optimised trajectories, and more energy-efficient approaches and landings at airports. Of the 127 solutions delivered so far by the SESAR 3 JU, 100 have positive effects on the environment and more solutions are in the pipeline. The estimation is that the mature SESAR 1 and SESAR 2020 solutions can already enable a reduction of 4% in CO2 emissions

The SESAR 3 JU welcomed many important representatives from the aviation and transport sector, including MEP Karima Delli, Aviation Director at DG Move, Filip Cornelis, as well as representatives from the French Education and Research Ministry, who were all very interested in how SESAR is contributing to a more sustainable European sky.

In addition, the SEAR 3 JU hosted a panel in the Paris Air Lab, featuring Alain De Zotti, Airbus, Andreas Boschen, SESAR 3 JU, Gerald Regniaud, DSNA, and LeAnn Ridgeway, Collins Aerospace. Moderated by Rosalinde Van der Vlies, DG RTD, the panel discussed the environmental challenges facing air transport in Europe today, in particular in terms of ATM, and explored what’s needed to accelerate the digital transformation of ATM and support a swift transition to greener aviation.

At the European Commission’s exhibition stand, a number of SESAR 3 JU project partners presented their innovative work:

The air show also provided the backdrop for France partners in U-ELCOME, one of the SESAR 3 JU’s Digital Sky Demonstrators, to officially inaugurate a beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) long range corridor in Bretigny-sur-Orge, just outside the French capital. Livestreamed during the show, the test flights showcased some the drone solutions and services that U-ELCOME partners are developing within the framework of U-space for the roll-out of urban air mobility in the coming years.
