The SESAR Joint Undertaking has published the first Call for Proposals for SESAR 2020 Exploratory Research projects, under the umbrella of the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research Framework Programme and its “Smart, Green and Integrated Transport” activities.

With an overall budget of EUR 85 Million, SESAR 2020 Exploratory Research (ER) aims to harness Europe’s scientific excellence for the next generation of the European ATM system. SESAR 2020 ER will address and analyse long-term research concepts, technologies or scientific gaps that will allow for the evolution of a safe, competitive and sustainable ATM system in the future.

Under this first Call for Proposals, a total maximum budget of EUR 20.6 Million is available to co-finance research projects on 11 research topics within two areas, namely:

 

  1. ATM Excellent Science & Outreach: This area (also known as Fundamental Research) explores unknown research areas.  The Research Topics addressed in this Call are: Automation, Data Science, Information Management, Environment and Meteorology, Economics and Legal Change in ATM.
  2. ATM Applications-Oriented Research: This area aims to help mature new ATM concepts, emerging technologies and methods to the level of maturity required to feed into SESAR 2020 industrial research. The Research Topics addressed in this Call are: high performing Airport Operations, Separation Management and Separation Standards, CNS (Communications, Navigation and Surveillance), Trajectory Based Operations, ATM Architecture and ATM Performance.

Who should apply?

Research Centres, SMEs, universities, industry and/or organisations meeting Horizon 2020 eligibility criteria that have the capability to carry out ATM-related research activities.
