Location: Glasgow
Description
About the exercise
Through the use of real time ATC simulators, this exercise aimed at validating approach procedures with vertical guidance using satellite based augmentations system. This will pave the way to fly instrument landing system type approaches to airports independently of ground based infrastructure.
Results
While keeping the controller workload within acceptable limits, the trials showed mostly improved airport landing rates with reduced airline diversions. Additionally, by using improved vertical guidance, environmental benefits resulting from reduced fuel burn or noise footprint are expected.
