SESAR partners have successfully validated an automation tool supporting air traffic controllers in detecting and preventing conflicts between aircraft. The tool makes use of actual flight data from on board the aircraft, using EPP or Extended Projected Profile, to improve the accuracy of the predicted trajectory. The validations were conducted within the framework of the SESAR PROSA project on ensuring safe separation between aircraft during en-route flight phases, as well as in the terminal manoeuvring area.
During the visitors’ day on 2 April in Sofia, Bulgaria, controllers demonstrated the possibilities for resolving multiple conflict situations with the use of the prototype tool. The tool provides controllers with automated support for detecting and preventing conflicts between aircraft. In doing so, the aim is to enable controllers to manage increased traffic safely while enabling greater capacity of the airspace. ANSP representatives from France, Germany, Poland and Italy and other industry guests, were given the opportunity to learn more about prototype, which has now reached pre-industrialisation phase (V3).
The validation exercise is expected to provide thorough insight on the maturity of tool. The information will be subject to further expert analysis according to the standards set by the SESAR Programme. The results and the final assessment of the prototype tool capabilities are expected in the second half of 2019.
The tool was developed jointly by SESAR member Airbus Defence and Space and PROSA project partner Bulgaria’s air navigation service provider (ANSP), BULATSA (See all PROSA project partners).
