Partners in the SESAR 2020 Project PJ.10-W2 PROSA have successfully validated a solution to delegate ATM services within a virtual centre environment. The validation made use of a pan-European infrastructure comprised of components of different vendors, demonstrating the feasibility of enabling Europe to move to an interoperable, cost-effective and flexible service provision infrastructure.
The solution (PJ.10-W2-Solution 93 - Delegation of airspace between ATSUs using virtual centre concept) was validated for the first time at V2 level of maturity (technical level of readiness TRL4). The following two operational use cases were addressed using parts of the airspace managed by control centres in Karlsruhe and Zurich:
- Delegation of ATM services provision at night
- Delegation of ATM services provision according to abnormal conditions (ATSU contingency)
Led by the German air navigation service provider, DFS, the exercise made use of a distributed pan-European infrastructure prototypes from Indra, Frequentis and DFS. Operational experts from DFS, NATS and PANSA were involved in the validation, while ENAV provided expertise in human performance and safety aspects.
The partners analysed the behaviour and views of air traffic controllers involved in the exercise and found that the solution was operationally feasible and acceptable.
The validation exercise was made possible thanks to the mitigation actions taken by the partners in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
An Open Day took place on 5 March to present the results of the validation.
