connecting europe

In order to satisfy the needs of the European citizens, we must think multimodal and move away from modernising transport modes in isolation of one another. European citizens are looking forward to benefit from an optimised, efficient, affordable and comfortable door-to-door mobility.

Multimodal, customer-centric, efficient and sustainable, shared-mobility solutions, fully integrating different modes of transport, in urban and rural environments, are essential components for a smarter and more sustainable mobility in Europe. The Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy adopted by the European Commission outlines a long-term vision for transport in Europe that will make digital (connectivity and automation) multimodal mobility a reality.

This joint session, organised by Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking and SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking, will explore how rail and air traffic management sectors and local governments contribute to the goals of the European Union in achieving a multimodal European transport system.

During the session, experts from both transport sectors, regional governments, and the European institutions, will look at current and future opportunities to be ambitious in the planning and execution of an integrated multimodal transport.

We will look at the progress made towards multimodality and identify the steps needed to speed up its delivery, with a particular focus on integrated European traffic management systems, interfacing all modes of transport, reliable and real-time information on schedules, new concepts for stations and airports as connecting hubs, smart planning and disruption management, integrated management of passenger flows, supported by advanced artificial Intelligence enabled IT solutions, fuelled by seamless data exchange, automation, connectivity and drones at European and regional levels.
