From 8-10 March 2016, SESAR participated in the World ATM Congress where this year’s SESAR Exchange Theatre – co-hosted by the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU) and the SESAR Deployment Manager (SDM) - provided an opportunity for the audience to hear the latest on SESAR research and innovation (R&I) and deployment activities.
The event kicked off with a joint session by the SJU and the SDM, highlighting the SESAR lifecycle – from R&I, industrialisation to deployment – which was explained with two concrete examples – Airport operations centre (APOC) and extended-arrival management (E-AMAN). Download the presentation.
A highlight of the 2016 event was the announcement by the SJU of the 19 members that will participate in SESAR 2020. This renewed SJU membership brings together over 100 separate organisations with a European and global presence from across the full scope of ATM research to the ongoing SESAR development. Read more.
The event also provided the backdrop for the annual SESAR Project Awards, which this year recognised 4 projects focussing on system-wide information sharing, enhanced airport arrivals and flight efficiency procedures, and the compatibility between SESAR Solutions. Read more.
Separate to the SESAR Exchange Theatre, the SJU organised an educational workshop on Spectrum, which provided an overview of key SESAR solutions that optimise the use of spectrum and explained the SESAR vision and strategy to create a sustainable environment for spectrum efficient aeronautical systems. The SESAR Exchange Theatre also provided the backdrop for the first ever European Single European Sky Awards. Read more.
A session on the European ATM Master Plan closed the loop on a year-long campaign in which all ATM stakeholders expressed their satisfaction on the resulted updated plan. Read more
Other highlights of the event included technical sessions on ground-to-ground interoperability, SESAR research on virtualisationand exploratory research and SESAR and the military.

2016 is an exciting year for SESAR as the Deployment Manager is up and running and the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) prepares a new wave of research and innovation (R&I) projects within the framework of SESAR 2020. The 2016 World ATM Congress is therefore a perfect opportunity for ATM stakeholders to find out more about these developments and how SESAR is delivering a high-performing ATM system for Europe.
