Through SESAR, Europe now has a concept of operations (ConOps) for the safe and secure integration of drones (U-space). Most operations to date have taken place in segregated airspace yet the need to integrate U-space into controlled airspace is increasingly recognised as an enabler to widespread use of unpiloted vehicles.  Building on the success of CORUS and CORUS XUAM, the project will extend and mature the ConOps to include airspace that is not presently covered, e.g above very low level and in the vicinity of controlled airports.

The project aims to extend the scope of the existing U-space ConOps version 4.0 into extended geographical scope (e.g., above VLL and eVTOL operations in the vicinity of airports, CTR, cities, and low altitude helicopter operations). It will make provision for functionalities and U3/U4 services supporting U-space integration and suggest SESAR Solutions, flight rules and airspace structure as elements of the ConOps. CORUS five will also raise relevant concerns, such as liability and quality of digital terrain models, common altitude reference systems and issues of convergence between Mean Sea Level (MSL) vs Above Ground Level (AGL) altitude references. The ultimate objective is to publish the fifth edition of the U-space Concept of Operations that supports safe, green and acceptable operations of crewed and uncrewed aircraft.
