Description

AI-based automation for cockpit and flight operations are the key enabler for single pilot operations (SPO). The project aims to develop digital assistants to support SPO operations, assuring the same (or higher) level of safety and same (or lower) workload as operations with a full crew today. The project will deliver solutions that enable operational efficiency and route flexibility, taking into account the complexity of the future airspace. The results will support the commercial and operational viability of those new airspace users.

The aim is to deliver a system installed in the cockpit and integrating three technological enablers:

  • Pilot state and task load monitor, able to detect pilot drowsiness, sleep, incapacitation, and their current and predicted task load.
  • Human-AI collaboration layer, dynamically distributing the cockpit tasks between the pilot and a set of digital assistants while ensuring the pilot always stays in the loop and in charge.
  • Trustworthy machine reasoning platform, representing an underlying technology providing capabilities for rule-driven, transparent, and explainable decision aiding or decision making across the whole solution.
