Optimising trajectory management across the ATM network calls for coordinating the airspace needs of both civil and military users. The aim is to update WOC processes responsible for the management of the mission trajectory so that individual military airspace user needs and priorities can be accommodated without compromising the overall ATM system and the performance of all stakeholders.

This SESAR solution covers the development of the mission trajectory  in the planning phase so it can be integrated into network operations and become part of the future Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) environment. The solution sees the continued development of a harmonised flight plan format for all military IFR flights - so they can be automatically validated and incorporated into the flight plan processing and distribution system IFPS of the Network Manager. Implementation of this improved Operation Air Traffic flight plan (iOAT FPL) will be rolled out as legacy systems are being replaced.

The SESAR solution includes the following elements:

  • The management of mission trajectory (MT) with variable profile areas (VPA) type of airspace reservations (ARES) as shared via iOAT FPL in the planning phase.
  • The ARES conceptual evolution allowing more precise identification of ARES Entry and Exit location and time, to support the increased quality of the trajectory prediction in the corresponding wing operations centre (WOC), network manager (NM) and ATC systems. This includes the evolutions of the VPA module reference as integral part of the evolved iOAT FPL syntax & concept.
  • The B2B services for iOAT FPL filing from WOC to NM as well as for the iOAT FPL distribution from NM to ATC. B2B services were as well successfully validated to connect Regional ATFCM (NM) and local ATC FMP systems.
